How It Works

Austedo (deutetrabenazine) is a vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of dopamine available in nerve cells, thereby reducing the abnormal movements associated with Huntington’s disease and tardive dyskinesia. By inhibiting VMAT2, deutetrabenazine prevents the transport of dopamine into synaptic vesicles, leading to decreased dopamine release and subsequent reduction in motor activity.

• Concomitant use with reserpine or within 20 days of discontinuing reserpine
