Casodex 50 MG contains the active ingredient bicalutamide. It belongs to a group of medicines called ‘anti-androgens.’ It is used along with other medicines to treat prostate cancer by blocking the effects of male hormones such as testosterone.

Things you need to know before taking Casodex

There are several things to bear in mind before starting this medication.

Avoid Casodex

  • if you are allergic to bicalutamide or any of the ingredients of the medicine Casodex
  • if you are taking a medicine called cisapride or other antihistamine medicines like astemizole or terfenadine
  • if you are a woman

Warnings And Precautions

  • If you have any of the abovementioned conditions, such as heart or blood vessel problems, which include heart rhythm issues (arrhythmia), or are already under treatment with appropriate medicines for these conditions. The mentioned heart rhythm problems or other heart diseases may be further increased with the usage of Casodex.
  • If you consume blood-thinning medicines or drugs to prevent blood clots.
  • If you have liver problems
  • If you suffer from diabetes and are prescribed ‘LHRH analogue’. These include goserelin, buserelin, leuprorelin, and triptorelin.
  • If you go to a hospital for any reason, tell the staff over there that you are consuming Casodex.
  • If you and your partner are planning for a baby. You or your partner must use birth control while you are on the medication of Casodex and for 130 days after stopping Casodex. Interaction of Casodex with other medicines

Consult with your health practitioner or pharmacist if you have recently taken, plan to take, or are currently taking any other medicines. This includes medicines sold without a prescription, homeopathic medicines, or herbal medicines. This is the case because Casodex can affect the way other medicines work.

However, steer clear of Casodex if you are already taking the medicines mentioned below:

  • Cisapride (used for some types of indigestion).
  • Certain anti-histamine medicines (terfenadine or astemizole).

Casodex might hamper the working of the following:

  1. Medicines used to treat rhythm problems of the heart (e.g. quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, and sotalol)
  2. It may raise the risk of heart rhythm problems when accompanied by other medicines (e.g. methadone (used for relief of pain and detoxification of drug addiction), moxifloxacin (an antibiotic), and antipsychotics used to treat severe mental illnesses).

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are consuming any of the following medicines:

  • Drugs taken orally by mouth to stop the clotting of the blood (oral anticoagulants).

You may be subjected to a number of blood tests before and during your treatment with Casodex.

  • Ciclosporin (to repress your immune system).
  • Calcium channel blockers (used in the treatment of high blood pressure or some

heart conditions).

  • Cimetidine (for stomach related issues).
  • Ketoconazole (to treat infections caused by a fungus)

Driving and using machines

Casodex is not reported to be a concern in your driving or using tools and machinery. However, it is reported that some patients experience drowsiness or sleepiness occasionally while consuming Casodex. If you experience the same, discuss it with your health practitioner or pharmacist and take their advice.

Casodex contains lactose

Lactose, which is a type of sugar, is a part of the constitution of Casodex. If you have been diagnosed as intolerant to some forms of sugars, do contact your doctor before consuming this medicinal drug.

Casodex contains sodium

Casodex contains a negligible amount of sodium, less than 1 mmol (23 mg) per tablet, which is basically ‘sodium-free.’

Pregnant And Breast Feeding Women

Casodex is strictly not to be consumed by women, especially women bearing a fetus and the mothers breastfeeding their babies.

Casodex can affect male fertility permanently.

Dosage And Usage

To achieve optimal benefits, Casodex 50 mg 28 tablets should be consumed as prescribed by the healthcare provider, with dosage adjusted according to the needs of the individual patient on the basis of their response to the medicine.

Consult a doctor for dosage, and do not alter the recommended amount.

  • The suggested dose is one tablet every day for an adult.
  • Ingest the tablet with a glass of water.

If you forget to take Casodex

  • Jaundice – yellowing of the skin or eyes. This may be a sign of liver failure or
  • Liver failure in rare cases (1 in 10,000).

Uncommon side effects (affects 1 in 100)

  • There is severe shortness of breath that may get worse. This can be accompanied by a cough or high fever.

These may be an indication of an inflammation of the lungs called ‘interstitial lung disease.’

Rare: (affects 1 in 10,000)

  • Increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight

You may be required to perform certain blood tests to check for any changes to the blood.
