How It Works
Descovy is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide. Emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide are both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that work by interfering with the action of an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which is essential for the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By inhibiting reverse transcriptase, Descovy helps to reduce the amount of HIV in the body and improve immune function.

Indications
- Descovy is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 35 kg in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
- It is also indicated for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to emtricitabine, tenofovir alafenamide, or any component of the formulation
- Co-administration with dofetilide
