How it Works

Elotuzumab, marketed under the brand name Empliciti, is a monoclonal antibody used in the treatment of multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that forms in plasma cells. Elotuzumab works by targeting a protein called SLAMF7 (Signaling Lymphocytic Activation Molecule Family member 7) found on the surface of myeloma cells and certain immune cells. By binding to SLAMF7, elotuzumab stimulates the immune system to attack and destroy myeloma cells. It enhances the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, boosting their ability to kill cancer cells, and directly targets myeloma cells to inhibit their growth.

Indications

• Treatment of multiple myeloma in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone in patients who have received one to three prior therapies
• Treatment of multiple myeloma in combination with pomalidomide and dexamethasone in patients who have received at least two prior therapies including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to elotuzumab or any of its components
• Severe active infections
• Pregnancy
• Lactation
