How it Works

Entyvio (vedolizumab) is a biologic medication used to treat certain autoimmune conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Vedolizumab is an integrin receptor antagonist that works by specifically binding to the α4β7 integrin, a protein on the surface of specific white blood cells (lymphocytes). By binding to this integrin, vedolizumab inhibits the interaction between the α4β7 integrin and the mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1). This interaction is crucial for the movement (trafficking) of white blood cells into the inflamed gastrointestinal tissue. By preventing this interaction, vedolizumab reduces inflammation and symptoms in conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
