Uses of Exosurf Neonatal Injection 1’s

What is it prescribed for?

  • Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

    This medicine is used for the prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in newborn babies with a birth weight of 700 grams or greater, undergoing mechanical ventilation. It occurs when the baby's lung function decreases which may lead to serious breathing difficulties.

General Warnings
  • Birth weight

    Care must be taken for use in newborn babies whose birth weight is less than 700 gms due to an increase in the risk of pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeding from lungs) and other severe adverse effects. Close monitoring of heart rate and arterial oxygenation is recommended during treatment with this medicine.

  • Intratracheal administration

    The medicine should be administered through intratracheal route only.

  • Mucous plugging

    In newborns whose ventilation becomes notably impaired during or immediately after the therapy with this medicine may have mucus plugging of the endotracheal tube. Therefore, it is recommended to perform suctioning of all newborns to avoid endotracheal tube obstruction due to mucous plugging.

  • Missed Dose

    Since this medicine is usually administered by a qualified healthcare professional in the clinical/hospital setting, the likelihood of a missed dose is very low.

  • Overdose

    Since this medicine is administered in the hospital setting by a qualified healthcare professional, the likelihood of an overdose is very less. However, emergency medical treatment will be initiated by the doctor if an overdose is suspected.

How to use Exosurf Neonatal Injection 1’s

Intratracheal: For intratracheal administration only. Suction infant prior to administration, inspect solution to verify complete mixing of the suspension. Administer via side port on the special ETT adapter without interrupting mechanical ventilation. Administer the dose in two 2.5 mL/kg aliquots. Each half-dose is instilled slowly over 1-2 min in small bursts with each inspiration. After the first 2.5 mL/kg dose turn the infants head and torso 45 degree right for 30 seconds, then return to the midline position and administer the second dose as above. Following the second dose, turn the infant’s head and torso 45 degree to the left for 30 seconds and return the infant to the midline position.

What happens if I miss a dose of Exosurf Neonatal Injection 1’s?

Intratracheal: Prophylactic treatment: Give 5 mL/kg as soon as possible; the 2nd and third dose should be administered at 12 and 24 hr later to those infants remaining on ventilators.
Rescue treatment: Give 5 mL/kg as soon as the diagnosis of RDS is made. The 2nd 5 mg/kg dose should be administered 12 hr later.
