    This medicine is used for the treatment of amebiasis, a parasitic infection that affects the intestine and also for the treatment of amebic liver abscess (accumulation of pus) caused by Entamoeba histolytica.

  • Trichomoniasis

    This medicine is used in the treatment of trichomoniasis which is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Trichomonas vaginalis.

  • Bacterial Vaginosis

    This medicine is used in the treatment of overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina caused by Lactobacillus species.

  • Bacterial infections

    This medicine is used to treat the infections caused by bacteria in blood, lungs, genital areas caused by Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium species.

  • Peritonitis

  • Allergy

Warnings for special population
  • Pregnancy

    This medicine is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy to treat bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. It can be used in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy only if clearly needed.

  • Breast-feeding

    This medicine is known to excreted through the breastmilk. It is used in breastfeeding women only if clearly needed. Breastfeeding should be avoided for 24 hours after single-dose maternal treatment. Monitoring of candidal infections and diarrhea is necessary.

General Warnings
  • Blood cell count

    This medicine may lower the blood cell count and may lead to leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and bone marrow aplasia. Close monitoring of WBC count, platelets is necessary. Discontinue the treatment if any signs of low blood cell count appear.

  • Neurologic Toxicity

    This medicine may cause neurological effects like convulsions and peripheral neuropathy. Inform the doctor if you have any neurological problems. Any symptoms of convulsions, tingling or burning sensation of hands and feet should be reported to the doctor.

  • Impaired liver function

    This medicine may cause liver injury. The baseline of liver enzymes should be obtained before initiating the therapy. Any signs of elevation in the liver enzymes should be informed to the doctor. Discontinue the treatment until the levels reach to normal.

  • Dialysis

    The desired effect of this medicine is not achieved in dialysis patients. It is necessary to schedule the dose for administration after dialysis procedure or supplemental doses can be given after dialysis

  • Chronic therapy

    This medicine should not be used unnecessarily unless instructed by the doctor because it can increase the risk of developing resistance to this medicine and it can increase the risk of additional infections.

  • Driving or Operating machinery

    Use of this medicine may cause blurred vision or dizziness in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms during treatment with this medicine.

  • Missed Dose

    If you miss a dose of Medo tablet 400 mg 10×10’s, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed dose.

How to use Medo tablet 400 mg 10×10’s

Administered by continuous intravenous infusion or by intermittent IV infusion over one hour. Do not give by direct IV injection. Do not administer IV metronidazole with aluminum needles or hubs or through same IV line as other drugs.
Compatibility: Stable in D5W, NS.
Y-site administration:
Drug to Drug IV Compatibility: Acyclovir, amikacin, cephazolin, cefepime, ceftriaxone, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, cisatracurium, diltiazem, dopamine, enalapril, esmolol, fluconazole, heparin, hydrocortisone, hydromorphone, labetalol, levofloxacin, linezolid, lorazepam, magnesium sulphate, methylprednisolone, midazolam, milrinone, morphine, piperacillin/tazobactam, vasopressin.
Drug to Drug IV Incompatibility: Amphotericin B cholesteryl sulphate complex, aztreonam, filgrastim, lansoprazole, meropenem, pantoprazole, warfarin.
When admixed: Incompatible with aztreonam, dopamine, meropenem.
Stability: It is ready-to-use clear colourless solution stored at controlled room temperature and protected from light.

Gl disturbance, furred tongue, unpleasant taste. Leucopenia, urticaria, angioedema, CNS disturbances, dark urine. Neuropathy and epileptiform seizures on long term therapy.

What happens if I miss a dose of Medo tablet 400 mg 10×10’s?

Adults: Infections due to anaerobic pathogens: ORAL: 400 mg three times daily. INJECTION: 500 mg eight hourly by IV infusion then oral therapy.
Invasive intestinal diseases in susceptible subjects: ORAL: 800 mg three times daily for five days: less susceptible subjects: 400 mg three times daily for five to ten days.
Hepatic diseases, including amoebic liver abscess and hepatitis and other forms of extra-intestinal amoebic disease: ORAL: 400 mg three times daily for five days.
Pelvic inflammatory disease: ORAL: 400 mg twice daily for 14 days.
Symptomless cyst passers: ORAL: 400-800 mg three times daily for five to ten days.
Acute ulcerative gingivitis: ORAL: 200 mg three times daily for three days.
Acute oral infections: ORAL: 200 mg every 8 hr for 3-7 days.
Leg ulcers and pressure sores: ORAL: 400 mg every 8 hr for 7 days.
Trichomoniasis/Non-specific vaginitis: ORAL: 400 mg twice daily for 7 days or 200 mg three times daily for seven days or 800 mg in the morning and 1200 mg at night for two days or 2 gm as a single dose. Treat male partner concurrently.
Surgical prophylaxis: ORAL: 400-500 mg 2 hr before surgery; up to 3 further doses of 400-500 mg may be given every 8 hr for high-risk procedures. INJECTION: By IV infusion 500 mg up to 30 minutes before the procedure, further 3 doses of 500 mg every 8 hr may be given for high-risk procedures.
Children: Anaerobic infections (usually treated for 7 days and for 10-14 days in Clostridium difficile infection): ORAL: 1-2 mth, 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hr; 2 mth-12 yr, 7.5 mg/kg, max 400 mg, every 8 hr; 12-18 yr, 400 mg every 8 hr. INJECTION: By IV infusion over 20-30 minutes. Neonate less than 26 wk corrected gestational age, 15 mg/kg as a single loading dose followed after 24 hr by 7.5 mg/kg daily; Neonate 26-34 wk corrected gestational age, 15 mg/kg as a single loading dose followed after 12 hr by 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hr; Neonate over 34 wk corrected gestational age, 15 mg/kg as a single loading dose followed after 8 hr by 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hr; 1-2 mth, 15 mg/kg as a single loading dose followed after 8 hr by 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hr; 2 mth-18 yr, 7.5 mg/kg, max 500 mg, every 8 hr.
Pelvic inflammatory disease: ORAL: 12-18 yr, 400 mg twice daily for 14 days.
Acute ulcerative gingivitis and other acute dental infections: ORAL: 1-3 yr, 50 mg every 8 hr; 3-7 yr, 100 mg every 12 hr; 7-10 yr, 100 mg every 8 hr; 10-18 yr, 200-250 mg every 8 hr.
Fistulating Crohn’s disease: ORAL: 1 mth-12 yr, 30 mg/kg, max 500 mg, 2 hr before the procedure. 12-18 yr, 400-500 mg 2 hr before the procedure; up to 3 further doses of 400-500 mg may be given every 8 hr for high-risk procedures. INJECTION: By IV infusion: Neonate under 40 wk corrected gestational age, 10 mg/kg up to 30 minutes before the procedure; Neonate over 40 wk corrected gestational age, 20-30 mg/kg up to 30 minutes before the procedure; 1 mth-12 yr, 30 mg/kg, max 500 mg, up to 30 minutes before the procedure; 12-18 yr, 500 mg up to 30 minutes before the procedure; up to 3 further doses of 500 mg may be given every 8 hr for high-risk procedures.
Invasive intestinal amoebiasis, extra-intestinal amoebiasis (including liver abscess): ORAL: 1-3 yr, 200 mg 3 times daily for 5 days in intestinal infection and for 5-10 days in extra-intestinal infection; 3-7 yr, 200 mg 4 times daily for 5 days in intestinal infection and for 5-10 days in extra-intestinal infection; 7-10 yr, 400 mg 3 times daily for 5 days in intestinal infection and for 5-10 days in extra-intestinal Infection; 10-18 yr, 800 mg 3 times daily for 5 days in intestinal infection and for 5-10 days in extraintestinal infection.
Urogenital trichomoniasis: ORAL: 1-3 yr, 50 mg 3 times daily for 7 days; 3-7 yr, 100 mg twice daily for 7 days; 7-10 yr, 100 mg 3 times daily for 7 days; 10-18 yr, 200 mg 3 times daily for 7 days or 400-500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days, or 2 gm as a single dose.
