How it Works

Orencia (abatacept) is a biologic medication used to treat autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. It works by modulating the immune system. Abatacept is a fusion protein composed of the extracellular domain of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) linked to a modified Fc portion of human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1). By binding to CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells, abatacept inhibits the co-stimulation of T cells. This action prevents the activation of T cells, which play a critical role in the inflammatory process of autoimmune diseases, thereby reducing inflammation and tissue damage.

Indications

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to abatacept or any of its excipients
• Severe infections, such as sepsis or opportunistic infections
• Concurrent use with TNF antagonists (due to increased risk of infections)
• Immunocompromised patients
