Effient, a formulation of Prasugrel Hydrochloride, is a medication used to prevent blood clots in patients with acute coronary syndrome who are undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Each tablet contains 5mg of Prasugrel, an antiplatelet agent that helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.
How It Works
Prasugrel Hydrochloride works by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Platelets are small blood cells that clump together to form clots. Prasugrel is a prodrug that, once metabolized in the liver, irreversibly inhibits the P2Y12 ADP-mediated platelet receptor, thereby preventing ADP from binding to its platelet receptor and subsequent platelet activation and aggregation. This action reduces the likelihood of clots forming in arteries, which is critical in preventing heart attacks and other thrombotic cardiovascular events.
