Shingrix Vaccine Herpes Zoster Vaccine

Belongs to Category

How it Works

Shingrix is a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine designed to prevent herpes zoster (shingles). Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingrix contains a glycoprotein E (gE) antigen, which is a component of the VZV virus. When administered, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce a strong, targeted immune response against the gE antigen. This response helps prevent the reactivation of the VZV in the body, thereby reducing the risk of developing shingles and its associated complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The adjuvant system in Shingrix, AS01B, enhances the body’s immune response to the antigen.
